Suspicious Income Tax Dept Website

Update ( 8th July, 9.15 PM IST) : IT Dept. Website is no longer marked with warning in google results.  Things looks good now!

Today I googled for I.T Dept URL ( Well, It’s july and almost every one is rushing to submit final tax assessment to Income Tax Department. So, am I ) and my search query gave me the result I wanted. But to my horror, with warning from Google.

“This site may harm your computer”.

If you don’t trust me, Here’s the screenshot,

Income Tax Dept.

Clicking on the link “This site may harm your computer” will lead to you another page where it is clearly stated

“This warning message appears with search results we’ve identified as sites that may install malicious software on your computer:”.

Question again – What malicious software IT Dept is going to install ? Is it hacked? What’s wrong in visiting the site ? I dared to do that :D

I tried visiting the I.T. Dept site by typing the link in address bar. But,  I would say FF3 is clever here. It stopped me for a while and alarmed saying “Reported Attacked Site”.  When I clicked on the button “Why was this site blocked”, it showed up yet another page which is nothing but the diagnostic page for the site from Google. Diagnostic message from FF3 ( or should I say Google ?) clearly states what’s wrong with the site . It explained clearly why google thinks that browsing this site would not be a good idea.

What happened when Google visited this site?

Of the 256 pages we tested on the site over the past 90 days, 47 page(s) resulted in malicious software being downloaded and installed without user consent. The last time Google visited this site was on 07/04/2008, and the last time suspicious content was found on this site was on 07/04/2008.

Malicious software includes 48 scripting exploit(s), 40 trojan(s), 2 exploit(s). Successful infection resulted in an average of 4 new processes on the target machine

And surprisingly, AVG Free Link scanner reports the site  as “SAFE”
